Position: 36° 52’ N, 02° 58’ E
Weather: Wind – light airs,
Visibility 4-5 miles.
Depth of water: 100 fathoms
Duty: Patrol off Algiers
Warning: (1) RDF contact at 3,800
yards
(2) Torpedo track
sighted which passed down starboard side on a converging course
crossing the bows at 10 yards.
Details of Attacks:
Surface Evidence:
An RDF contact was followed by a torpedo track
which was sighted. The U-boat was not seen. There was no surface
evidence of damage.
Asdic Evidence:
No recorder trace has been forwarded. Asdic
conditions were described as good. The contact faded after the
fourth attack, no difficulty apparently having been experienced in
holding the contact up to that time, and was not found during a
search which was carried out in the area for forty minutes. No
explanation has been given for firing only two charges in each
attack. No Hydrophone Effect was heard during any of the attacks.
A track chart has been forwards and the U-boat
appears to have been travelling at speeds up to 4 knots between the
attacks. The U-boat movements shown are consistent with the Doppler
and movement of the target reported on the attack form.
CO’s Opinion
These attacks were carried out on a U-boat, four
good attacks being made, contact fading after the last.
Decision of the U-boat Assessment Committee.
It is not understood why HUSSAR fired only two
charges in each of her four attacks. The attack is assessed as
‘U-boat present. No damage.’
