Since the launch of this website in April
2006 there has been a steady number of e-mails from relatives of crew
members and, indeed, former members of the crews of the Halcyons themselves. Details have
been included here of those contacts relating to HMS Jason, although e-mail addresses are excluded for privacy
and to avoid spam messages.
Please

I just found this site yesterday by
chance. I had long given up that there would be much on HMS Jason on
the internet. Great news for you and I hope it will be of help, my
uncle William Arthur Bromley, RCN, served in the Jason in 1942, as a
stoker I believe. Dates (other than just “1942”) I am not sure of as
of yet but I know that after surviving the sinking of HMS Broadwater,
October 18, 1941, he went on leave then on his return Jason became his
2nd ship. Uncle Art went on to HMS
Limbourne in 1943, went on leave 1 week before it was torpedoes
and served to Dec 1945 in the HMCS Milltown. Uncle Art passed away in
1997, I inherited his service medals, some
memorabilia, and his naval photo album. This is where you come in, in
that album are at least 4 photos that actually are captioned “Jason”,
1 is of the ship but the other 3 show crew – 1 of Art alone on the
deck, another with all the stokers on the deck , and the last one 2
crew member friends with names shown. There are also about 6 other
photos of sailors (named) but at HMS Davenport (I think), these photos
are in the same area of the album as Jason but have no way of
confirming what ship assigned to at that time.
Just a short email to mention that
I have shown my Dad the web site for the HMS Jason (and other ships of
course), he was very pleased to see Uncle Art’s picture there. Dad
thought that the web site was very good, my sentiments exactly. He
mentioned that in recent conversation with an English relative on
Uncle Art’s war time experiences that during convoy duty to
Murmansk,
the Russians would not let them leave the ship.

Hi, my dad "Robert Sowerbutts" served
on the HMS Jason from 1943-45 he was a stoker (class 1 ). I think he
may have been the drunken one referred to on 24/4/44. I have his 1945
diary and this refers to a few other cases of being on report, or
having pay stopped, he was in court in Ipswich 28/6/45 and fined 6
pounds. He was from Hanley, Stoke on Trent, and his number was P/KX
161208.
I would love to see my dads name on the crew list. |

My father Robert Bacchus served on HMS Jason, but does not appear on
the crew list I have a number of photographs which show members of
the crew on board. I believe my father served his apprenticeship
Vospers as he was an engineer. I know he was on leave and was in
the Cafe de Paris the night it was bombed 8th March 1941. The
photographs are now on a CD, I would be happy for them to go on the
web site. Please send a copy to Peter Bromley.

My father, Leslie F Leonard, is listed
as being one of the crew on HMS Jason & I was showing him the site
last week. He says he was actually Leading Wireman MS & served on the
Jason from January 1943, joining the ship when it was doing sea trials
in Leith Docks. Prior to this he was on the Margaret Hyde
Minesweeping trawler where he remembers having his 21st birthday!
He has only spoken about his
experiences to me in recent years and was very pleased to see all the
information, particularly about the devastating incident in Aug 1944.
