This week comes news of First Class Stoker Charles James Willis
younger son of Mrs A Latham,
Kings Road, Foley park who is serving on the minesweeper HMS
Sharpshooter, Stoker Willis who's photograph accompanies this
paragraph took part in the recent Russian convoy action and his
ship picked up many survivors from sunken craft. When last home in
July this year he returned with 18 stitches in his knee, wounds
received when his ship rammed and sank a u-boat in Northern
waters, since then he has visited several countries in the Artic
Circle and in his letter home recently, he enclosed a Russian ten
shilling note and an Icelandic currency note. Only 21 years of age
he has been in the Navy three years and before that he was
employed by Wilson Lovatt Ltd contractors. He was educated at Holt
Heath School, Holt Fleet and came to
Kidderminster
with his mother six years ago. Very keen on sports of every
description he played football for Kidderminster athletic and was
also fond of darts, snooker, billiards and skating. His elder
brother L/Cpl William Willis is serving with the Oxford and Bucks
Light Infantry somewhere in England. |
