I met my future wife
when we were in dock at Grimsby, she was on holiday at Cleethorpes. We
were later married in Cape Town in 1951 whilst I was serving at Cape
Town Radio Station, another lovely posting.

My
father John T. Blackwell, known to his family and friends as Jack,
served as a stoker on HMS Sharpshooter from 1941 until after the
vessel returned to the U.K. from the Mediterranean in the autumn of
1944. He was born in 1908 and died in 1981 and apart from his war
service worked as a butcher in his family business until he retired.

of visiting him in August 2007 and he was able to name many of the
crew in the photo's as well as recounting many fascinating stories. He
joined up at 16, saying he was 18.

initial lack of order in evacuation; important role of British
railways; improvement in evacuation; collision with St Helier and
consequent damage to ship; rescue of soldier in laundry basket;

Born
in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1911, died in Ashton April 19th.
1975, the picture is from 1969. Frank seldom talked about his time in
the war, when asked about the ramming, his comment was “That U-boat
went down with all hands.” I suppose in the euphoria of the moment
everything was rosy, but with hindsight he realised they were lads,
just like him.
