St Austell had initially set a target of
£102,450,
enough to build two minesweeper hulls, during the week of November
27th to December 6th, 1941. A local newspaper reported that by the
end of the first day £31,000 had been collected and
within three days that figure had risen to £81,000.
The final figure collected by St Austell was a staggering £220,000.
In recognition of the money raised and as further incentive, the
Admiralty allowed communities to 'adopt' a warship and would present
the main town with a shield to commemorate Warship Week. For the
outlying villages there were illuminated certificates and
photographs of 'their' ship. These shields normally had a raised
boss with a `fouled anchor' carved into it. Below, a brass plate
would say that the shield had been presented to the district by The
Lords Commissioner of the Admiralty. Instead of the anchor, some
would have the badge of the ship that the area was adopting. A
beautiful example can be seen today in the new council chambers in
St Austell. Here the badge of the HMS JASON, a Halcyon class fleet
minesweeper, is mounted on the shield above a brass plate which
reads: 'Presented by The Lords Commissioner of the Admiralty to St
Austell (Cornwall) to commemorate the adoption of HMS JASON during
Warship Week, December 1941'.
I am enclosing
... with grateful thanks to Restormel Borough Council, pictures of
the ship's badge and plaque which are still on proud display in
the council offices of what was formally St Austell town council
who raised a large sum to adopt the Jason. Source: R
